TBSC Local Council Met May 17

TBSC Local Council met on Thursday May 17.

Council discussed current programing and confirmed that the VFW will barbeque chicken for a Center fundraiser on June 1. Cathie Galvin, Harrisonburg/Rockingham Director, shared an update with Council on several VPAS activities, encouraged Council members to look at ideas for local fundraising ideas, and also discussed VICAP funding challenges.

Joi Brown explained her role with VPAS and discussed the need for development of fundraising and other revenue opportunities. The next meeting will be July 19.

United Way Supporter Volunteered at TBSC May 16

Vanessa Derrow, 0ffice Coordinator in the Wellness Suite at Eastern Mennonite University, participated in the United Way Day of Caring at TBSC on Wednesday May 16. Vanessa helped package home delivered meals, visited with Center members, and was also able to help deliver meals.

Price Rotary Hosts TBSC

Twelve Timberville Broadway Senior Center members visited Price Rotary Senior Center Thursday May 10.

PRSC Director Mia Olsen led chair exercises and Bingo, and Ressa Baugher from Avante’ brought picture frames for Center members to paint and decorate. Joyce Nussbaum, TBSC Director, and Mia agreed that the two groups interact really well and are planning another activity together in June.

TBSC Attended Aging Gracefully Conference

The annual Aging Gracefully Conference sponsored by Rockingham Memorial Hospital was held Tuesday, May 8 in Harrisonburg.

Fourteen TBSC members attended the conference and had the opportunity to learn more about the benefits of exercise for older adults, Palliative Care and how it differs from Hospice, and over the counter pain medications.

There were also many exhibits from local health care agencies and businesses, and opportunities for free screenings for cholesterol, sight and hearing, diabetes, and more.

TBSC members enjoyed the event and many stated that they would like to encourage other Centers to attend the conference next year.

TBSC Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon

About 65 TBSC members, Local Council members, and Meals on Wheels Volunteers enjoyed a volunteer appreciation meal at TBSC on Thursday April 26.

Cathie Galvin, Harrisonburg Rockingham Regional Director, welcomed everyone and thanked them for the contribution they are making to the community. Cathie also stressed the value of personal contact when meals are delivered. TBSC Director Joyce Nussbaum updated the volunteers on specific details of the local program, and TBSC Local Council Member Pastor David Burrough shared thoughts about the value of volunteers.

TBSC members helped decorate and prepare food for the luncheon on Wednesday and especially enjoyed making apple dumplings. It is inspiring to reflect on all the ways people volunteer and help each other at TBSC and in the community.
